What made you decide to join Samsung Electronics?

Medha I wanted to learn many things beyond standard design tasks, and I knew that being with a globally recognized company would give me that opportunity. Sudhanwa India’s industrial design industry is shaping up. Developing countries offer more opportunities where design can play a key role. At Samsung Electronics, I can create many designs for a diverse audience. I think that is every designer’s dream.

Share with us one interesting point about working at Samsung Electronics.

Sudhanwa I really enjoy designing for the young generation of India who will go on to lead the country’s future. Young Indians are influenced by other developed countries, but they also have great pride in their own culture. It is very interesting to see how we can implement the values pursued by young Indians in Samsung Electronics’ designs.

What is your own philosophy on design?

Sudhanwa I would often say that ‘design is to act upon contemporary practices.’ I think a good design captures deep meaning and conscious thought instead of simple reactions. This belief has been reinforced ever since I joined Samsung Electronics. Just how an arrangement of a song that strays away from the melody can ruin the original song, being overly whimsical or experimental can turn off the consumers. A good design is born when multiple angles are considered, such as the psychology of the user, the manufacturing process, and market response. Medha Design is not a simple decoration. A good design provides credibility through logic and empathy, while also maintaining the balance between solid technology and aesthetics. Through these things, I believe a good design must convey powerful resonance to the customers.

Are there things you want to learn more as a designer?

Medha Every now and then I venture into a completely new field such as cooking, candle making, or archery to take a break from design and get a fresh perspective. Apart from these, I also think it is important to develop certain skills to increase my work performance, like management. I want to learn more about managing my time, projects, teams, files, and sometimes, even my anger. On the technical side, I want to explore 3D graphics and motion design.

Where do you usually get your inspirations for design?

Medha I tend to self-reflect and organize my thoughts by looking back on my work. I would sometimes go back to the drawing board and examine previous design drafts to learn from any points I have missed back then. Sudhanwa I draw inspiration from architecture, nature, and everyday life. I also travel and observe many different spaces to pick up on visual clues for colors, finishes, and materials.

How does your colleagues influence you?

Medha Having colleagues with diverse backgrounds and different talents is a great influence in itself. There are many people here who have underlying talents that are different from their responsibilities at work, such as a great animator who is also a brilliant singer or an excellent fine artist who also happens to be a fantastic cricket player. I get a lot of positive influence from simply being with these well-rounded individuals.

Are there areas you would like to explore going forward?

Medha I would like to challenge myself once more in the fields of user-focused research and design solution. I want to jump into the deep end of a consumer’s life and build meaningful narratives for every part of the process of creating a product. Sudhanwa The small appliance industry is booming in India right now. It will be interesting to work in this domain as a product designer to expand Samsung Electronics’ product portfolio.
